03 Silly Song

In 2005 I had many songs on hand that worked wonderfully in live performance, but that I wasn't sure how to record without the audience interaction. So I put together a four-piece rock band and recorded this live family concert CD.

I've written many different versions of this song over the years - it's very versatile for fitting in with different themes. The recorded lyrics are below, followed by some other versions I've performed. Sometimes I ask my audience to help me write brand new verses on the fly! If you can think of some new verses for this song, please post them here!

Silly Song - song lyric

Chorus:
It's just a
Silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly song
Silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly silly song

I once sang this song to a zebra on the savanna,
But I don't think he liked it much; he bonked me with a banana!

Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to a skunk out in the woods,
But I don't think he liked it much; now I don't smell so good!

Spoken: Everybody pinch your nose like this...
Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to a great big hairy ape,
But I don't think he liked it much; he shut my mouth with tape!

Spoken: Everybody tape your mouth shut.
Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to a penguin and his cohorts,
But I don't think they liked it much; they put wiggly fish down my shorts!

Spoken: Put a fish down your shorts and get wiggly!
Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to a shark way out at sea,
But you know what?
I think he kind of liked it; he smiled as he swallowed me!

Spoken: Everybody grin really big like a well-fed shark.
Let me see those shark teeth!
Repeat Chorus

Spoken: One more time - This time we'll see how fast we can do it.

Repeat Chorus, as fast as possible!

- End -

Silly Song - Oklahoma Animals Version

I once sang this song to a buffalo on the prairie.
I don't think he liked it much; he chased me to the library!

Spoken: Let's see those buffalo horns
Repeat Chorus, holding pointer fingers to sides of head

I once sang this song to a skunk out in the woods,
But I don't think he liked it much; now I don't smell so good!

Spoken: Everybody pinch your nose like this...
Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to a playful river otter.
I don't think she liked it much; she knocked me into the water.

Spoken: Now we're going to sing underwater
Repeat Chorus, while wiggling finger up and down over lips to simulate underwater singing

I once sang this song to a big ol' grizzly bear.
I don't think he liked it much; he stuffed my mouth with hair.

Grab a wad of bear hair, stuff it in your mouth...
Repeat Chorus, as if mouth is full

I once sang this song to a racoon and his cohorts,
But I don't think they liked it much; they put wiggly fish down my shorts!

Spoken: Put a fish down your shorts and get wiggly!
Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to an alligator under a cypress tree,
But you know what?
I think he kind of liked it; he smiled as he swallowed me!

Spoken: Let me see those giant alligator teeth!
Repeat Chorus, using hands fingers to make big jaws and teeth

Spoken: One more time - This time we'll see how fast we can do it.
Repeat Chorus, as fast as possible

- End -

Silly Song - Insect Version

I once sang this song to a giant praying mantis.
I don't think he liked it much; he chased me to Atlantis!

Spoken: Let's see those mantis mandibles
Repeat Chorus, holding preying mantis hands in front of mouth

I once sang this song to a stinkbug in the woods,
But I don't think he liked it much; now I don't smell so good!

Spoken: Everybody pinch your nose like this...
Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to a queen bee and her daughters.
I don't think they liked it much; they chased me into the water.

Spoken: Now we're going to sing underwater
Repeat Chorus, while wiggling finger up and down over lips to simulate underwater singing

I sang this song to a hornet once when I was very young.
I don't think he liked it much; he stung me on my tongue.

My tongue swelled up like this...
Repeat Chorus, with tongue sticking out

I sang this song to a caterpillar when our teacher did dismissal us
But I don't think she liked it much, she wrapped me in her chrysalis

Repeat Chorus, face covered with arms
Spoken: Now break free, now fly away (use arms for wings)

I once sang this song to a colony of ants,
But I don't think they liked it much; they swarmed into my pants!

Spoken: Everybody get wiggly!
Repeat Chorus

I once sang this song to an angry looking bee,
But you know what?
I think he kind of liked it; he buzzed along with me!

Spoken: Sing it like a bee!
Repeat Chorus, in "bee" voice: bzzz bzzz bzzz....

Spoken: One more time - This time we'll see how fast we can do it.
Repeat Chorus, as fast as possible

Just try to sit still and frown when you hear this song... impossible! This one is guaranteed to bring out the smiles in my sons, even when they've had a rough day. They even like to make up their own verses afterwards, and giggle about them! Thanks, Monty!

This is one of the songs my son loves. He will sing in and just laugh!
We make up different versions to see who can be the silliest!
